Retail EDI News

VAN Migrations
With the purchase of QRS by Inovis late last year, and the subsequent sale of the IBM/Advantis VAN services to GXS, there has been some changes by the Retailers in their VAN choices:

The May Department Stores began migrating their trading partners from QRS/Advantis to Inovis this May.

Dillard's now utilizes two VANs, GXS and Inovis and is migrating their traffic away from QRS/Advantis.

Saks is migrating trading partners to Inovis this summer.

Federated completed their migration to Inovis in June.

Stein Mart also migrated from QRS/Advantis to Inovis in June.

New EDI Documents and Requirements

Federated Department Stores continues to be a leader in driving supply chain compliance and efficiencies with the following initiatives:
  • Purchase Order Carton Consolidation (POCC) - This means that vendors shipping multiple purchase orders at the same time to the same destination should pack the purchase orders in combined cartons whenever possible.
  • VICS Standard Bill of Lading - By using a standard format which includes a vendor's UCC manufacturers number, the possibility of duplicate BOL numbers is eliminated.
  • Source Tagging by the Supplier - Efficiencies are gained when the supplier applies the security tags.  This also lays the foundation for future RFID tagging at the item level.

Like Federated, Neiman Marcus is also implementing consolidated cartons. Implementation requires understanding the mapping in the Advance Ship Notice.

Kohl's will begin trading with the 860 Purchase Order Change Request document in the fall of 2005.  Usage of the 860 will be optional.

Target added the 860 Purchase Order Change transaction in June and it is now a required document.

Burlington Coat implemented new GOH (Garment on Hanger) guidelines in June.

Retail Mergers and Acquisitions

Belks acquired 47 Proffitt's McRae's stores from Saks and is in the process of transitioning EDI from Saks to their own systems.

Federated Department Stores has announced that they will transform 330 May Department Stores into Macy's stores creating a powerful chain of 730 stores. They will not convert the Lord & Taylor division and have not disclosed plans for Marshall Field's.

EDI Service Provider News

The Uniform Code Council has changed it's name to GS1 US. If you utilize UPC codes, this is the organization that you joined to get your manufacturer's ID. GS1 is the new name for the combined legacies of UCC and EAN International. They provide global bar code standards and global EDI standards.  More information can be found on the GS1 US website.

Technology News

Radio Frequency Identification, RFID, continues to gain acceptance and implementations gain speed in a variety of application areas from luggage tracking at a major international airport to patient tracking within a health organization.

As of March, Wal-Mart has implemented RFID with 100 suppliers. They are making plans to have all suppliers RFID capable during 2006.

The DoD has just approved implementation of the electronic product code (EPC) and RFID for it's 60,000 suppliers. The EPC is the identification code used in RFID applications and it contains more information than available in a UPC. It is an expanded code which can be used to track individual instances of an item with a unique serial code for each item.

Clearly, implementations of RFID are moving along at a fast pace. However, the standards are also continuing to evolve. Many applications will become more cost effective as prices on tags drop. So like any new technology, we recommend that you plan your implementations carefully and if you are not one of those top 100 suppliers, bide your time.

Additional information on RFID applications can be found here.
